Choker Jewelry

By: Gregory Hepburn

The neat thing about necklace jewelry is that there are so many different items available, and that most of them are so economical. If a merchant wants to sell you, say, a silver necklace, they will try to get as much money as possible out of it, even though it is just a silver chain with a relatively simple silver ornament attached to it. But, for some reason, if a merchant is selling you jewelery pendants instead, they are not going to charge nearly as much for it. So you can put together the same ornament jewelry for a fraction of the price if you are prepared to go out and purchase the jewelery ornament in one place and the silver necklace in the other.

I suspect it has to do with what people are prepared to pay. Its a simple supply and demand thing, really. Most people want completed ornament jewelry - that is, an already fully assembled necklace that looks nice as is, and is ready to give as a gift. These people are prepared to pay a lot of money for their jewelery necklaces - in fact, they actually expect to, and would be suspicious if it was not pricey. But the people who purchase charms to put together their own ornament jewelry are not out there searching for the perfect necklace to spend a lot of money on to give to their love. Instead, they want simply to get some kind of neat, funky little jewelery ornament things that they can put together into their own necklace. They are looking for bargains, and they are in no hurry, so the people selling ornament jewelry have to be prepared to sell for less. After all, the buyers are always prepared to get their pendant jewelry at the thrift store instead.

I have been making my own ornament jewelry as gifts for friends and family, as well as for my own fashion accessories, for some time now, and I must say that I really like the experience. Making ornament jewelry is really much the same experience as hunting in the dentist's treasure chest when you are a child. You are going to get some really neat surprise, and you never know exactly what it will be ahead of time. The best is when you assemble something that you know that no one else would have thought of before. Then you have truly unique ornament jewelry!
