Credit Cards and Sports Fans

When it comes to supporting favourite sports teams, some fans will go to any lengths to show their allegiance to their favourite team.

From personalised replica shirts, mugs to take to work and even decorations for their car – fans the world over like to spend money letting the rest of us know just who they follow – whether it be football, soccer or basketball.

For some fans, this is even true of their credit cards – for what could be more of a show of loyalty to hand over a piece of plastic with your team’s badge on it when paying for something?

Football-based cards have become big business, with some companies offering services such as 0% credit cards for loyal fans, either through the club themselves or drumming up business outside the ground on match day.

Some clubs run affiliate programs with major credit card providers, with the opportunity to offer discounts on items such as season tickets to loyal fans, with some putting a percentage of the amount earned back into the club themselves – usually through contributions to youth team systems.

Other schemes offer fans the chance to earn reward points on purchases, which can be used in the club shop or towards prize draws to win items exclusive to the club – such as signed shirts and other collectibles any fan would dream of owning.

When applying for sports-based credit cards it’s advisable to read the small print, for whilst many offer a 0% deal to begin with, many supporters may find themselves in difficulty when the interest-free period ends.

However, despite fears over interest rates, the rewards that can be earned using points systems are attractive to sports fans, and can take their support of their team to a new level.
