How Can I Promote My Small Business Website

By: Kyle Farrah

Every business owner becomes excited when they finally create their first website. It is always an exciting experience realizing that anybody in the world will have access to the content that you are providing. You will eventually realize however that no one besides you and possibly a few close business partners, family members etc. know that your website exists. Since no one knows about your site, you will be the only visitor to it.

In order to get traffic to your website you will need to do some of the following things.

1) Submit your site to the Search Engines.

The majority of your visitors will find your site by using a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. You should submit your website to all of the major search engines, this is not a requirement to getting your site listed in them, however it is highly recomended, and does not take much time to do. There is absolutely no reason for you not to do it.

2) Go on Forums.

In order to promote your website you should go on forums, or online discussion boards, related to your product. You should add a link to your signature. Then start making some posts. Try to make a post as often as you can. If you can set a daily routine of making at least 5, 10, or so posts a day, you will eventually develop trust within the forum community. Your signature will appear after every post that you make, and many people who read your posts will be likely to buy your product, or at the very least view your website.

Also if the forum has a "Buy, Sell, Trade" section, you can make posts there advertising your product or service. If it doesn't, you should avoid explicitly advertising your website in your posts, as many people will consider this to be spammism, regardless of your intentions.

Note: Make sure that the forum allows links in signatures (Sig Links), as some forums do not allow you to include links in your signature. Also make sure to thoroughly read the forums TOS to make sure that you don't break any of the boards rules.

3) Use your sites domain name as your email address.

Create an email with your domain name ending. For example if your website is "sbireviewed DOT COM", make an email address that is MYNAMEHERE "AT" SBIREVIEWED DOT COM. Then when you need to contact any customers/clients use this email address. This will let them know that you have a website, and they will be much more likely to view it. Also you should add a signature to your emails, so that every time you send an email, you will have your websites link at the bottom of it. This basically works in the same way that forums sig links work.

4) Comment on other peoples blogs.

Look for blogs related to your website, and make comments on their blog posts. Do this often, but make sure that your comments aren't spammish in nature. Try to make your posts longer, and make sure that they are related to the blog post. Include the address to your website at the bottom of the comment.

5) Participate in Yahoo Answers.

Yahoo has created a website which allows users to ask questions, and then allows other members to answer them. You can use this to direct traffic to your website.

First create a Yahoo Account. This should only take a few minutes. Then look for questions that your website addresses, and then answer them. In the sources section list your websites address.

Remember for all of these techniques you will want to avoid spamming. Try to do these often, but make sure that you don't over do it. Make sure that every time you answer a question, or comment, or do anything else on any of these sites, that you don't spam.

These techniques if used correctly can provide tons of traffic to your website, and may allow you to get hundreds or even thousands of new customers. With persistant effort you will eventually be able to reach a global audience of hundreds of thousands of people, who are all eager to buy something.
